John Mayer Rolex Daytona Resurfaces at SiriusXM Amagansett Gig

The John Mayer Rolex Daytona is back on its owner’s wrist, and the watch world has taken notice. During a live performance for SiriusXM at The Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett, New York, John Mayer was spotted wearing the yellow-gold ref. 116508 with its distinctive green sunray dial, the very watch that now carries his name in collector circles.

How the John Mayer Rolex Daytona Got Its Name

The 116508 was a slow burner when it debuted at Baselworld 2016. Collectors at the time were too busy chasing the steel-and-ceramic ref. 116500LN that launched the same year to pay much attention to a yellow-gold Daytona with a matching Oyster bracelet, tachymeter bezel, and a green sunray dial with tone-on-tone totalizers. The 40mm case sat quietly in the Rolex catalogue, trading around retail or modestly above, as WatchGuys notes, without generating any particular frenzy.

That changed in 2019, when Mayer appeared on an episode of Hodinkee‘s Talking Watches and called the ref. 116508 a sleeper hit. The description did not stay accurate for long. After the episode aired, secondary-market prices on the 116508 climbed sharply, hitting the $70,000 to $100,000 range depending on condition and whether box and papers were present. Over the following years, WatchGuys reports, it became one of the most in-demand precious metal Daytonas in the catalogue, well into six-figure territory at peak.

The original retail price of the 116508 has been cited differently across sources. WatchGuys lists the original retail price at $37,700; the watch was also reported at launch at $34,650. Either way, the gap between what you paid at an authorised dealer and what the grey market was demanding became extraordinary. The so-called Mayer Effect was real, and it reshaped how collectors thought about yellow-gold sports watches.

The 116508 and Its Successor: What Changed

In 2023, Rolex discontinued the ref. 116508, replacing it with the ref. 126508. The new version keeps the green dial but introduces contrasting gold subdials, moving the aesthetic away from what the original offered. The dial finish changed too: where the 116508 had a sunray effect, the 126508 uses a lacquered dial to reduce glare. According to WatchGuys’ comparison of the two references, the successor carries a retail price of $48,400, a substantial step up from the original’s list price and a reflection of how the market around this particular reference has shifted since Mayer first talked it up.

For those tracking the difference between the two, the changes are meaningful without being dramatic. The gold subdials on the 126508 give it a more layered look, while the original’s tone-on-tone totalizers created a cleaner, more uniform face. Collectors who prefer the purity of the original’s dial layout continue to seek out pre-owned 116508 examples, which is part of why the watch remains in demand even after being phased out of production.

The Watch Back in the Wild

Mayer wearing the 116508 at a live gig is a reminder that watches with nicknames attached to them do not lose their pull just because the market has moved on to the next thing. The ref. 116508 has a documented story: a specific episode, a specific moment of name-checking, and a measurable before-and-after in its market trajectory. That kind of provenance does not fade when a successor reference arrives.

The Stephen Talkhouse appearance keeps the original John Mayer Rolex Daytona in circulation, quite literally. For anyone watching the grey market on the 116508, the timing is a useful data point: when the man who made the reference famous pulls it back out in public, collector attention tends to follow.
