Best Body Butters for Dry Skin Ranked: Eight Picks That Actually Deliver

When cold snaps strip your skin raw and standard lotion barely touches the damage, the best body butters for dry skin are worth knowing about. These are oil-based, water-light formulas built for the kind of dryness that parks itself on your heels, elbows, and knees and refuses to shift. Below, eight products that editors and board-certified dermatologists rate for serious hydration, from sub-$15 drugstore finds to $68 spa-in-a-jar options.

Why Body Butter Works Harder Than Lotion

Body butters are made with little to no water and lean instead on occlusives and emollients: shea butter, cocoa butter, squalane, ceramides. Debra Luftman MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Beverly Hills and Calabasas, California, notes that their thicker consistency and higher concentrations of occlusive ingredients make them more effective at preventing water loss from the skin. They melt in, smooth the surface, and keep moisture locked where it belongs.

The timing matters too. Julie E. Russak MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City, recommends applying body butter immediately after a shower, while the skin is still damp. ‘Pat the skin dry, and while the skin is still moist, apply body butter to all the areas that are rough and dry, including feet, hands, ankles, and elbows,’ she says. ‘This locks in the moisture obtained from the shower, decreases trans-epidermal water loss, and helps repair the barrier.’

As for who benefits most: Corey L. Hartman MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Birmingham, Alabama, describes body butter as ‘a waterless, thicker version of a body lotion’ that suits very dry skin best, though anyone can use one, particularly during drier winter months. He adds that key ingredients to look for include shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut and avocado oils, and vitamin E, while alcohol and witch hazel are best avoided.

The Best Body Butters for Dry Skin, Reviewed

OSEA Undaria Algae Body Butter ($54) is the overall pick here, and the clinical data behind it is worth flagging. According to OSEA Malibu’s clinical results, 100% of testers agreed that skin looks and feels smoother, and 97% agreed the product is rich and moisturising without feeling greasy. The OSEA Malibu formula is also claimed to hydrate for up to 72 hours, which matters when you’re out in the field and not reaching for a top-up mid-afternoon. The formula combines undaria seaweed extract and caffeine to help firm and refine texture, shea butter and a carbohydrate-derived humectant for deep hydration, and oat-derived ceramides with aloe to calm redness. Creative producer Sydney Malone, who tested it, called it ‘perfect for dry or winter weather, especially for us dry skin girlies.’

Saltair Multi-Lipid Body Butter ($22) is the pick for scent and value. A 2025 Allure Best of Beauty Award winner, the warm sandalwood-amber-musk option comes in a generous 10-ounce jar and costs under $25. It contains ceramides, phospholipids, and coconut and sea buckthorn oils. Sejal Shah MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City, notes that this combination of ingredients is great for skin barrier support and can provide all-day hydration. Former content director Kara McGrath found the formula ‘a mid-weight cream that makes your skin feel hydrated, not sticky.’ Check availability at Saltair.

Nonfiction Enriching Body Cream ($45) earns its place for very dry skin despite being labelled a cream. Shea butter is the second ingredient in the formula, followed by a roster of plant-derived oils. Niacinamide and panthenol add anti-inflammatory support, while squalane further reduces water loss. One caveat from Dr Shah: body butters with lots of botanical extracts may irritate sensitive or reactive skin, so a patch test is sensible before committing.

EOS Cashmere Whipped Oil Butter ($13) is the best drugstore option. A trio of shea, cocoa, and argan butters forms its base, supported by glycerin, vitamin E, and coconut oil. Social director Kassidy Silva keeps a jar at her desk for midday top-ups: ‘A quarter-sized amount is all you need to get your forearms, neck, and hands.’ Note that the scent is heavily fragranced (a vanilla-cake finish) so those who prefer something subtle may want to look elsewhere.

Oak Essentials Dew Body Butter ($68) is formulated with mature skin in mind, according to designer and brand founder Jenni Kayne. It contains olive-derived stem cells and algae extract intended to encourage collagen production, improve crepiness, and fade dark spots. Senior shopping director Shanna Shipin called it her ‘Goldilocks formula: rich but not heavy, moisturising but not greasy,’ and praised it specifically for softening rough elbows and heels without leaving residue.

Naturium The Glow Getter Multi-Oil Body Butter ($20) targets dull skin with shea butter, squalane, and plant-derived oils rich in essential fatty acids. Dr Shah notes it also contains plant-based peptides that leave the skin with a dewy finish without heaviness, and that those peptides have a firming effect and support the skin barrier over time.

L’Occitane Shea Butter Ultra Rich Body Cream ($52) is the minimalist option, built on 25% pure shea butter. Dr Luftman highlights it particularly for dry and aging skin: shea butter protects against environmental stressors including UV rays, and is full of antioxidants including vitamins A, E, and F. As we age, Dr Luftman explains, ‘the skin naturally produces less oil, becomes thinner, and loses its ability to retain moisture’, which is precisely where a formula this concentrated earns its keep.

Kiehl’s Creme de Corps Whipped Body Butter ($49) rounds out the list for those who want an airy texture with serious staying power. Dr Luftman recommends it for its formula that absorbs quickly without greasiness. It combines plant oils and butters with glycerin and squalane, and carries a mild milk-and-honey scent. One note: some conditioners in the formula may clog pores, so those with oilier skin should use it sparingly.

Across the range, body butter applied at night gives the formula time to absorb and work before morning, a straightforward habit worth building into any cold-weather routine.
