The Air Jordan 9 ‘Space Jam’ is making its return this September, dropping on 19 September for $215 via Nike, Foot Locker, and select retailers, 30 years after the film that gave the colourway its name first hit cinemas.
Not the Jordan 11: Why the Air Jordan 9 Space Jam Matters
Most people, when they think of Space Jam and sneakers, land immediately on the Air Jordan 11 in its black patent leather. That shoe has been fetishised, retro’d, and argued over for three decades. But there is another pair from the film, worn by Michael Jordan in an early scene, that deserves its own attention: the Air Jordan 9 in its original black-and-white colourway.
The AJ9 carries a distinction most basketball shoes don’t. It was the first Jordan silhouette Jordan did not wear on an NBA court, because his first retirement (the baseball one) coincided with its 1993 release. The minor leagues saw a cleated version; the hardwood saw nothing. So when he pulled on the 9s for Space Jam, it was the first time he had publicly hooped in the shoe. The film made the colourway. The original colourway keeps things clean, white leather, black mudguard, black sockliner and sole, with a red Jumpman on the outside of the heel. Hatfield would later revisit that mudguard detail on the Air Jordan 11, the very shoe that tends to overshadow the 9 in Space Jam conversations.
What Changes in the 2026 Retro
This is not simply a straight vault pull. According to House of Heat, the 2026 version of the Air Jordan 9 ‘Space Jam’ will incorporate updated shaping closer to the original 1993 silhouette, rather than reproducing the proportions of more recent retros. For collectors who have spent years arguing that previous re-releases drifted too far from the OG shape, that is worth paying attention to.
Context helps here. When the shoe first released in 1993, the retail price was $125. The September drop price of $215 reflects three decades of sneaker market inflation, but the shoe being produced at all reflects how carefully Jordan Brand has managed this particular release. The ‘Space Jam’ 9 does not come back every few years the way some retros do. The last time it appeared was in 2016, for the film’s 20th anniversary. Before that, you were digging through resale. Jordan Brand has kept the cadence slow, which is precisely why the anniversaries register.
The 30th anniversary timing is not a coincidence, and the gap since 2016 is long enough that demand will be real. If the pattern holds, the next opportunity after September is a decade away. That is a long time to wait if you sleep on a drop.
The Air Jordan 9 OG was never a shoe built around flash. The design is considered, slightly austere, more boot than court shoe in its proportions. For anyone who actually watched Jordan lace them up in a gymnasium scene in 1996, the attachment is immediate. For everyone else, the silhouette stands on its own as one of the more underrated shapes in the Jordan line, and September gives you a clean chance to get a pair built, if House of Heat’s reporting holds, closer to the way Hatfield originally drew it.
