The Adidas Handball Spezial Loafer is heading to adidas.com and select retailers for Spring 2026, and it marks a proper shift in how sportswear brands are approaching the loafer trend, ditching the hybrid halfway house and committing to the real thing.
For the past two years, brands have been chasing the snoafer: part sneaker, part loafer, neither quite one nor the other. New Balance’s 1906L went viral in 2024 and opened the floodgates. Nike, Hoka and others followed. But where most of those designs hedged their bets, the Adidas Handball Spezial Loafer drops the sneaker element entirely and arrives as a full loafer, built on one of adidas’s most enduring silhouettes.
From the Indoor Court to the High Street
According to Design Scene, the Handball Spezial was first introduced in 1979 as an indoor court shoe built for performance. That foundation (a low-profile gum sole, clean lines, minimal bulk) is exactly what made it a street staple decades later, and it is the same sole unit that sits beneath this loafer version now.
The construction departs from the suede that defines a standard pair of Spezials. Smooth leather takes over, with piping running around the toe, a thick leather strap across the vamp, and a small metal Trefoil pin sitting at the penny slot. The Three Stripes run in clean white against the upper. It is a considered piece of design rather than a gimmick, and the silhouette carries it well.
Three Colourways, One Gum Sole
According to Sneaker Bar Detroit, the Adidas Handball Spezial Loafer launches in three colourways: Core Black/Gum (Style Code KJ0641), Wonder White/Gum (Style Code KJ0640), and Magic Beige/Gum (Style Code KJ0639). Each pairs the leather upper with the same gum sole that has anchored the Spezial since the original 1979 court version.
The Core Black colourway (the one generating most of the attention) is currently available in women’s sizing at $130. A men’s version is available at $120. Both are up on adidas and through select stockists.
The Handball Spezial has built serious cultural momentum over the past few years. Andrew Garfield, Paul Mescal, and Harris Dickinson have all been spotted wearing pairs. Collabs with Sporty & Rich and Taiwan’s Invincible have added further weight to the silhouette’s standing. More recently, Lionel Messi was seen in a stealthy all-black pair. That kind of reach (from football pitches to fashion weeks) is exactly why adidas chose this particular shoe to rework into a loafer rather than starting from scratch.
