Grand Theft Auto VI Gameplay Details: What the 27-Minute Trailer Shows

The full picture of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay details came into focus this week with the release of An Extended Look, a 27-minute trailer built around three substantial mission sequences. No narration, no title cards, just Jason and Lucia working their way through Vice City with guns, fast cars and a relationship that, according to developers, will demand as much attention as the criminal empire they’re building.

Three Missions, One Very Busy Open World

The trailer structures itself around three set pieces. First, Jason and Lucia fight their way out of a drug den mid-police raid. Then they join a criminal employer for a bullet-riddled car chase through Vice City streets. Finally, they provide private security at a high-society party before masked assassins crash it. Each sequence gives the camera room to move, and the world behind the action is dense: populated streets, reactive physics, weather that feels like it has actual weight.

A brief supercut late in the trailer expands the scope considerably. Basketball, scuba diving, weightlifting, kayaking, dirt bikes, fan boats, rally cars. Gas stations, diners and strip clubs that can be patronised or robbed. A streamer doing something called the ‘Trunk Challenge’ in a car Lucia has the misfortune of having stolen. According to one streamer who received an early look at the game, the open world is twice as large as the already substantial map in GTA V.

The gunplay has been overhauled too. Grand Theft Auto’s shooting mechanics have historically run loose, but what’s on screen here looks tighter, closer, in feel, to Rockstar Games‘ 2012 release Max Payne 3 than anything in the GTA series. Vehicle handling has similarly been tightened, with real-time physics governing what happens when you shoot out a police car’s tyres mid-chase. The results look unscripted and visceral.

Grand Theft Auto VI Gameplay Details on Jason, Lucia and the Relationship System

Jason and Lucia are a couple pursuing wealth through Vice City’s criminal infrastructure. A previous trailer established that Lucia begins the game newly released from prison. An Extended Look runs their relationship as a thread throughout: they bicker over how long Lucia takes to get dressed, debate whether they’re already late for a high-stakes meeting, and at one point the player is offered the option to press R2 to make them hold hands.

The system behind that relationship is more involved than it might first appear. Rob Nelson, head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North, told Polygon that the relationship between Jason and Lucia will require consistent effort to maintain. Consequence reports that a player’s actions will have ‘deeper’ repercussions on that relationship than the honour system in the Red Dead Redemption games, a meaningful benchmark given how much weight those games placed on player conduct.

Beyond the relationship, GTA VI will carry an RPG-style system that reflects how players choose to look after their protagonists. The amount of food Jason or Lucia eats, how often they train, and even how much sleep they get will all be reflected in their physical appearance, according to Consequence. Pet a dog mid-mission and you receive a small stat boost, hinting at a broader real-time morality layer woven into the world. Carjacking has also been made more granular: one scene shows Jason choosing between using a slim jim or smashing a window to break into a parked car.

Tone, Satire and the Soundtrack

The game sits tonally closer to Grand Theft Auto IV than to the more freewheeling GTA V. The crime story runs with more gravity. But the satire is still present in the margins: a note-perfect parody of an antidepressant advertisement, and a fast food commercial for a sandwich clocking in at a mere 30,000 calories.

The music, always central when you’re spending half the game driving, includes the Bellamy Brothers’ ‘Let Your Love Flow’, Depeche Mode’s ‘People Are People’, Cliff Richard’s ‘Devil Woman’, and Phil Collins’ ‘Against All Odds’. Rockstar’s Rupert Humphries has also confirmed that the game will include nods, both musically and narratively, to Florida’s real-life hip-hop scene.

One voice in the trailer stands out immediately: a cigar-smoking beach rat, unmistakably voiced by Stephen Root. Fans will find more buried detail in the coming days as they work through the footage frame by frame.

Grand Theft Auto VI launches on 19 November. Clear your diary.
