H. Moser Off-Grid Watch Brings Alpine F1 Tech to Your Wrist for Under $5,000

The H. Moser Off-Grid watch is the kind of piece that stops conversations cold: a Swiss timepiece with a digital engine, exposed circuitry, and enough party tricks to keep a table entertained for an hour. At $4,900, it also happens to be the most accessible entry point Moser has ever offered.

The Off-Grid is an evolution of a digital watch Moser developed for the Alpine Formula 1 team, originally built to keep pit crews on top of key moments throughout race days. The new model takes that same utility and opens it up to anyone prepared to put down nearly five grand for the privilege.

What the H. Moser Off-Grid Watch Actually Does

Press the main pusher on the left and the hands shift automatically between time zones, swinging from Tokyo to Berlin to New York in seconds. Keep going and you have a chronograph, an alarm, GMT, and a moonphase. The grand-finale feature is a built-in dictionary covering 10 common words and phrases across 21 languages, which, alongside the auto time-zone setting, makes a genuine case for the Off-Grid as a travel watch rather than a novelty.

Moser describes its approach as ‘an unprecedented architecture in which digital technology naturally converses with traditional watchmaking.’ The brand has made no attempt to disguise the electric heart of the thing: the dial opens up to reveal the full circuitry beneath. You can connect it to your phone via Bluetooth, and it charges from a dedicated charger. What it does not do is ping you with emails, spam calls, or any of the other noise that makes most wearable tech a nuisance.

Under the dial sits the Calibre D10, developed in partnership with H. Moser & Cie. and SEQUENT. The movement delivers a power reserve of 12 months in time display-only mode, meaning you could pack this watch for a long-haul expedition and not once think about charging it, provided you leave the more demanding functions alone.

Limited Run and Who Gets First Access

The Off-Grid comes in two configurations: a black case with a red fumé dial, and a blue case with a black dial. According to Hodinkee, each colour is limited to 1,000 pieces, making this a more generous production run than many expected from a maker known for tight numbers. Existing Moser clients get first access from 21 September through 23 September, with the watch opening to the public between 24 September and 5 October.

For context on where $4,900 sits within the Moser universe: the least expensive version of the brand’s signature Streamliner model comes in at roughly $26,000. The Off-Grid does not pretend to replace that. It is a different kind of object entirely, one that borrows the Streamliner’s design language and packages it around hardware that would not look out of place in a high-spec GPS unit.

The Broader Push to Reach Younger Buyers

Moser is not alone in trying to find ways to connect with collectors who are not yet spending at the top of the market. MB&F has its M.A.D.Editions, priced somewhere between $2,000 and $4,000. Ming is currently launching a separate brand, Donut Watches, built around sub-$1,000 price points. At the lower end, the Swatch collaborations with Omega, Blancpain, and Audemars Piguet continue to generate queues.

Each approach reflects the same underlying logic: luxury watch brands need relationships with people who are not yet luxury buyers. The Off-Grid is Moser’s version of that handshake, and unlike many entry-level manoeuvres, it does not feel like a compromise. The 12-month power reserve, the Alpine F1 lineage, the open-dial circuitry, these are not concessions to a budget. They are features the rest of the range does not have.

Public access opens on 24 September, with both colour variants available through that 5 October window. If the 1,000-piece-per-colour run sounds generous, bear in mind how quickly these conversations tend to end.
