A new study from Texas A&M University has found that creatine benefits aging adults in measurable ways (building lean tissue, improving strength and boosting cognitive function) even when those adults do no exercise at all. For anyone navigating the middle decades of life while juggling work, kids, and the creaking aftermath of decades on the hill, that finding deserves a proper look.
What the Texas A&M study actually found
The study, published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, followed 64 adults aged 45 to 65 over 12 weeks. Participants were split into groups taking either 10 grams of creatine daily or a placebo, then subdivided again into those who exercised and those who did not.
The results for the non-exercising creatine group were clear. According to Yahoo Health, that group gained roughly 1.1 kilograms of lean tissue over the 12-week period. They also showed improved strength, better muscle endurance, and enhanced cognitive function and memory, all without a single session in the gym. Those who combined creatine with exercise saw the same improvements, but to a greater degree.
One area where creatine made no difference was aerobic capacity. Performance on the stationary bike, walking tests, and treadmill or outdoor jogging was unaffected in both the exercising and non-exercising groups. Creatine, it turns out, is not a cardio supplement.
Creatine benefits aging adults: the wider safety picture
The Texas A&M research sits within a rapidly expanding body of evidence on creatine’s safety and efficacy. Dr. Richard Kreider, a professor and director of the Exercise and Sport Nutrition Lab at Texas A&M University, has spent more than 30 years investigating the effects of creatine. His lab’s work feeds into a growing consensus that the supplement carries minimal risk for most people.
That consensus got a substantial boost from a comprehensive review, published in February in the same journal, which analysed 685 clinical trials on creatine supplementation. As reported by Texas A&M Stories, the review found no significant differences in the rate of side effects between participants taking creatine and those taking a placebo. For a supplement that has attracted its share of scepticism over the years, that is a considerable body of reassurance.
Previous research had already pointed in this direction. A 2019 review published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine found that creatine supplementation after the age of 65 helped slow muscle loss regardless of whether participants exercised regularly. Separate research established creatine’s benefits on cognitive function across age groups, including older adults.
What it means if you’re active but ageing
For hill walkers, mountain bikers, and anyone else who puts serious physical demands on a body in its forties or fifties, the implications are worth unpacking. Muscle mass and strength begin a natural decline from middle age. The kind of load-bearing effort that builds muscle (scrambling, carrying a pack, pushing hard up technical singletrack) becomes harder to recover from. Anything that supports lean tissue and cognitive sharpness alongside that effort is worth understanding.
But the findings should not be read as permission to park the boots. Staying active matters for reasons creatine simply cannot replicate. Mobility, cardiovascular health, balance, and independence in later life all depend on continued movement. Dr. Alka Patel, longevity and lifestyle doctor and founder of the Million Hour Club, made the point plainly to GQ earlier this year: ‘Exercise isn’t just about looking good in the mirror, it’s about keeping your mitochondria firing, your inflammation down, and your heart beating strong for decades to come. If longevity is your goal, movement is your medicine.’
Creatine does not replace a wet Wednesday on the ridge or a pre-dawn swim in a cold tarn. What this research suggests is that, for adults moving through their middle decades, it may be a reasonable addition to the routine, particularly for those weeks when injury, illness, or life keeps you off the hill entirely. The lean tissue gains recorded in the non-exercising group did not require a single rep. That matters when you’re grounded and trying not to lose what you’ve built.
