Sunglasses Worn on Head: The Styling Move Taking Over Men’s Fashion

Sunglasses worn on the head (pushed back above the brow like the visor on a motorcycle helmet) have become the defining way stylish men are carrying their shades right now, and the people driving the trend have plenty to say about why it works.

For years, the choice was simple: glasses on your face, in a breast pocket, or hooked from a collar. The collar hang never quite died, but among the brands and creatives setting the pace, it’s looking increasingly dated. The head-worn alternative feels more active, more practical, more considered, and, as more than one person will tell you, considerably less try-hard than the classic shirt-clip.

Where the Sunglasses-on-Head Habit Comes From

Sage Toda-Nation, designer of the label Sage Nation (founded in 2020) and creative director at UK-based fashion brand YMC, traces the habit to a practical starting point. ‘I think it started because, when I had long hair, I would do it to keep my hair back, like a headband,’ he says. ‘And it also kind of just looks cool.’

Toda-Nation started buzzing his head about two years ago but says he still wears his sunglasses on his head out of habit and convenience. ‘It also means I don’t lose them,’ he adds. The case that comes with most pairs, he points out, is simply too bulky to stash comfortably in a pocket, which then means carrying a bag. A small styling decision can snowball into a more cumbersome affair. On the head, sunglasses stay accessible and avoid the scratches and crushing that come with a pocket shared with keys.

Toda-Nation’s connection to YMC carries some weight in the current conversation around British menswear. Vogue reported that he was appointed creative director in 2024, filling the position previously held by Moss, who passed away the year prior. That same December, the brand’s founder Collins bought YMC back from French Connection, which had owned it since 2004, a return to independent hands that gives Toda-Nation’s instincts considerable room to run.

Sunglasses as Part of the Outfit, Not Just Eye Protection

Jackie McKeown, creative director at Literary Sport, approaches the sunglasses-on-head look from a styling perspective rather than a practical one. She regularly positions shades as a headband on models, or sits them on top of a beanie, to add depth to a look that might otherwise feel flat.

‘I think it keeps the fit intact in a certain way, like when you are sitting in a bar, and you have to take off the glasses,’ she says. ‘It allows them to still be part of the outfit without being on your face.’ The reference point she reaches for is an outdoor one: ‘It feels reminiscent of old hiking references, or skiing, where you’re just putting a goggle up on your helmet.’

That instinct (sunglasses worn on the head as functional kit repurposed into personal style) runs through much of what makes the trend feel credible rather than contrived. It borrows from the logic of the mountains and the water, where keeping your eyewear accessible and secure is simply common sense.

The experimentation doesn’t stop there. Men are wearing shades resting across the bill of a ball cap, backwoods-style, as Jeremy Dufrene did at Paris Fashion Week. Others are going backward, or running Croakies (the neoprene straps long favoured by powerboaters and sailors) to hang glasses from the neck, or even clipping them from a belt loop.

‘It’s become this interesting thing where you just strap them to you as an accessory on its own,’ McKeown says. ‘Whether they’re on your face or not, it’s this other kind of addition to the look.’ Sunglasses have shifted from a single-use item into something closer to jewellery, another surface for expression, another detail that can signal whether someone has thought about what they’re wearing or simply grabbed the first thing to hand.

Toda-Nation is direct about where the line sits. The shirt-collar hang still has its defenders, but he isn’t one of them. ‘There’s something about putting it on your T-shirt that looks a bit shit,’ he says. On the head, at least, they’re earning their place.
